The global water quality crisis is affecting human health, economic growth, food security, and biodiversity. The availability of the world’s scarce water resources is rapidly decreasing due to the worsening pollution of freshwater resources. A reduction of about one-third of the global biodiversity is estimated to be a consequence of the degradation of freshwater ecosystems mainly due to pollution. There is an urgent need to restore our freshwater sources to their pristine original state and protect them from further degradation.
